Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma opened a Rs 1.52‑crore honey processing plant in South West Garo Hills, aiming to strengthen the state's apiculture sector.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma formally inaugurated a honey processing unit in the South West Garo Hills district on Thursday. The facility, built at an estimated cost of Rs 1.52 crore, is designed to provide value‑addition services for locally harvested honey, which has traditionally been sold in raw form.
The state government expects the plant to boost income for beekeepers by enabling them to market processed honey, wax and related products at higher prices. Officials said the unit will also create direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region, which relies heavily on agriculture and allied activities.
The inauguration is part of Meghalaya's broader initiative to develop its apiculture sector, which has seen steady growth in recent years due to the state's rich floral diversity. By enhancing processing capacity, the government hopes to position the state as a notable supplier of premium honey in the national market.
