The Chief Minister of Meghalaya launched the 'Read & Rise Meghalaya' initiative aimed at ensuring every child in the state attains basic reading skills.
During a ceremony in Meghalaya, the Chief Minister unveiled the "Read & Rise Meghalaya" programme, a government‑led effort to guarantee that every child in the state can read. The launch highlighted the administration's focus on early childhood education as a cornerstone for long‑term development.
The scheme targets children in primary schools and early learning centres, providing age‑appropriate reading material, phonics‑based curricula, and regular assessment to track progress. By creating a structured pathway from pre‑school to grade‑3, officials aim to close existing literacy gaps.
Implementation will involve collaboration with state education departments, local NGOs, and community volunteers. Training workshops for teachers, distribution of multilingual storybooks, and the establishment of reading clubs are among the key components.
State officials said the initiative will be rolled out in phases over the next two years, with periodic monitoring to ensure that literacy benchmarks are met across all districts.
