Meghalaya's chief minister defended the National People's Party's recent expansion, asserting that legislators can join any party of their choice.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma publicly defended the National People's Party (NPP) after a wave of legislators reportedly joined the party. He said that elected representatives have the constitutional right to choose their political affiliation without external pressure.

The remarks came in response to criticism from opposition leaders who alleged that the NPP was enticing MLAs with promises of positions and benefits. Sangma rejected these claims, insisting that the moves were voluntary and reflected the party's growing appeal among lawmakers.

Emphasising democratic norms, the chief minister urged political rivals to respect the freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution. He added that the NPP's focus on development and good governance aligns with the aspirations of the people of Meghalaya.

Sangma concluded by calling for unity among all legislators, regardless of party, to ensure stable governance and progress for the state.
