Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has taken charge of Meghalaya's Muay Thai governing body, signalling the state's ambition to expand its role in the sport.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was announced as the new president of the Meghalaya Muay Thai Federation during a ceremony in Shillong. The appointment is part of a broader effort by the state government to promote combat sports and raise the profile of Muay Thai at the national level.

Sangma, who has previously championed infrastructure development for sports, said the federation will focus on grassroots training, talent identification and participation in international tournaments. He emphasized the need for better coaching facilities and financial support for athletes.

The move has been welcomed by local sports administrators, who view Sangma's leadership as a catalyst for attracting sponsorship and improving the competitive standards of Meghalaya's fighters. The federation plans to organize state‑level championships later this year.

Officials expect the enhanced focus on Muay Thai to complement existing initiatives in football, cricket and athletics, positioning Meghalaya as a multi‑sport hub in the Northeast.

The appointment also aligns with the state's broader strategy to leverage sports for youth engagement and tourism promotion, with plans to host regional Muay Thai events in the coming months.
