The Meghalaya state cabinet has cleared proposed changes to private university regulations, aiming to bring them in line with University Grants Commission norms.

In a cabinet meeting held earlier this week, the Meghalaya government gave its nod to a set of amendments targeting private universities across the state. The revisions are designed to ensure that these institutions comply with the standards and guidelines laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Officials said the move will strengthen academic quality, improve governance structures, and safeguard student interests.

The amendment package includes provisions for stricter accreditation processes, mandatory disclosure of faculty qualifications, and clearer financial reporting requirements. It also aligns fee structures with UGC recommendations to prevent arbitrary hikes.

Stakeholders, including university administrators and student bodies, have been briefed on the changes and are expected to implement them within the stipulated timeline. The cabinet's approval signals the state's commitment to enhancing higher‑education standards in line with national norms.
