The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has cleared a separate electoral roll exclusively for Scheduled Tribes as part of its Sixth Schedule reforms, aiming to strengthen tribal representation.

During a recent session, the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly approved a resolution to create a separate electoral roll exclusively for Scheduled Tribes under the state's Sixth Schedule reforms.

The move is intended to enhance tribal representation and ensure that tribal voters are not diluted in the general electoral roll, a concern raised by several tribal organizations.

While the ruling party welcomed the decision, opposition leaders emphasized the need for transparent implementation and safeguards against misuse.

The state government will now work with the Election Commission to roll out the new list by the next general election, with a provisional timeline of 12 months.
