The Meghalaya government has earmarked Rs 20 crore for a project to identify the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo ancestry of 75 scholarship holders.
State officials announced that a Rs 20 crore fund will be used to locate the tribal origins of 75 scholars belonging to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities. The initiative, launched in Shillong, aims to document and preserve the cultural heritage of these indigenous groups while supporting the academic journeys of the beneficiaries.
The selected scholars, who have received state-sponsored scholarships, will undergo genealogical research in collaboration with local historians and tribal elders. By mapping their lineage, the project seeks to strengthen community identity and provide a clearer picture of the demographic composition of Meghalaya's higher‑education cohort.
Implementation will be overseen by the state's education department, which will coordinate field surveys, archival work and DNA‑based verification where required. The department expects to complete the initial phase within the next twelve months, after which findings will be compiled into a publicly accessible database.
