The Meghalaya government announced plans to pursue free trade agreements to boost the state's exports, cross‑border trade and market access.

Shillong – The state administration of Meghalaya has outlined a strategy to seek free trade agreements that could open new markets for its producers and traders. Officials said the move is intended to raise export volumes, streamline border commerce with neighboring regions and secure better market access for local goods.

The proposal comes as the state looks to diversify its economic base beyond traditional sectors such as agriculture and tourism. By negotiating FTAs, Meghalaya hopes to attract investment, reduce tariff barriers and create a more competitive environment for its businesses.

While details of the negotiations remain under discussion, the government indicated that any agreement will be aligned with national trade policies and will aim to protect the interests of small and medium enterprises across the state.
