Meghalaya aims for Rs 1,000 crore excise revenue in next few years, says CM

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that Meghalaya will target Rs 1,000 crore from excise duties over the coming years.
Shillong – The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, disclosed the state’s ambition to generate Rs 1,000 crore in excise revenue within the next few years. The target was outlined during a press briefing where the CM highlighted the role of excise duties in bolstering the state’s fiscal position.
Currently, Meghalaya’s excise collections stand at roughly Rs 300 crore annually, according to the state’s finance department. The government plans to widen the tax base by encouraging new liquor manufacturers, improving compliance, and upgrading collection mechanisms.
If achieved, the projected revenue boost could fund infrastructure projects, health and education initiatives, and reduce the state’s dependence on central transfers. Analysts note that the goal will require sustained enforcement and a favourable business environment for the sector.
