A group of students from Manipur travelled to Delhi, urging the government to implement the National Register of Citizens before the upcoming census.

Manipur-based students set out for the national capital on Saturday, pressing the central government to introduce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of the scheduled census. The young activists argue that a fresh citizen verification process is essential to address longstanding concerns about illegal migration in the northeastern state.

The delegation, comprising undergraduate and postgraduate students from several Manipur colleges, plans to meet officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs and present a petition outlining their demands. They also intend to raise the issue in public forums and media briefings in Delhi.

While the NRC has been a contentious topic nationwide, the Manipur students contend that its implementation before the census will ensure an accurate population count and protect the rights of genuine residents. The group has not disclosed any specific timeline for their meetings, but they expect a response from the authorities within the next few weeks.

Authorities in Manipur have previously expressed reservations about the NRC, citing logistical challenges. The students' move to Delhi underscores growing pressure from civil society groups seeking a definitive resolution before the census begins later this year.
