Manipur has accelerated its digital food security reforms, expanding smart ration shops and introducing a free rice scheme to improve access for vulnerable families.
Manipur’s government has announced a rapid expansion of its smart ration shop network, aiming to digitise the distribution of subsidised food grains.
Alongside the rollout, officials unveiled a new free rice programme that will provide 5 kilograms of rice per family each month to households below the poverty line.
The initiative is expected to reach over 200,000 families in the state’s rural districts, reducing dependence on market prices and ensuring food security during the lean season.
The state government plans to integrate biometric authentication and real‑time inventory tracking to curb leakage and improve transparency across the supply chain.
