A legislator from Manipur has appealed to the central government to launch the National Register of Citizens before the next census.

Manipur's legislative representative has formally urged the Union government to initiate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of the forthcoming decennial census. The plea was made in response to concerns that demographic changes could affect the state's ethnic composition and political balance.
The MLA argued that an NRC exercise before the census would provide a clear verification of citizenship, thereby preventing potential disputes over voter rolls and resource allocation.
He highlighted the precedent set by the NRC exercise in Assam, noting that a similar approach could help address long‑standing anxieties in the Northeast.
While the central government has not yet commented, officials are expected to weigh the request against the logistical challenges of conducting an NRC across the country before the census slated for 2024.
