A Manipur legislator has urged the Union government to launch the National Register of Citizens before the upcoming census, citing concerns over demographic changes.

A member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly has publicly appealed to the Centre to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the next national census. The MLA argued that a fresh NRC would provide a reliable database of citizens and prevent potential distortions in the demographic data that the census will capture.

The call comes as the government prepares for the 2024 census, which will be the first in a decade. The MLA warned that without an updated citizen register, the census could be vulnerable to inaccuracies that might affect resource allocation and political representation.

While the NRC was previously implemented in Assam, the Manipur legislator emphasized that a nationwide rollout is essential to address similar concerns across the country. No official response from the Union Home Ministry has been recorded yet.
