Civil society organisations in Manipur have urged the government to revise the National Register of Citizens before the upcoming census and delimitation exercise.

Manipur's civil society organisations have collectively called for an update to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) ahead of the scheduled national census and the delimitation of electoral constituencies. The groups argue that an accurate and current NRC is essential to ensure that the forthcoming demographic and electoral exercises reflect the true composition of the state's population.

Representatives of the organisations met with state officials to convey their concerns, emphasizing that any discrepancies in the NRC could affect the allocation of seats and resources that depend on census data. They stressed that a timely revision would prevent potential disputes during the delimitation process.

The demand comes as the central government prepares to launch the nationwide census, which will form the basis for redrawing constituency boundaries across India. While the government has not yet responded publicly, the civil society coalition has indicated it will continue to press for a swift resolution to avoid complications in the upcoming electoral reforms.
