Manipur's cabinet gave its final nod to a unified trade licence bill, a legislative move intended to replace the existing patchwork of permits that businesses currently must obtain from various authorities. The bill seeks to create a single, state‑wide licence that will be valid for all commercial activities, thereby cutting administrative delays and reducing compliance costs for entrepreneurs.
The proposal, tabled by the state government, was discussed in a closed‑door cabinet meeting before being cleared unanimously. Officials said the streamlined system will be managed by a dedicated department that will issue, renew and monitor licences through an online portal, aiming for greater transparency and ease of access.
If implemented as planned, the new framework could boost the ease of doing business rankings for Manipur and encourage investment in sectors ranging from retail to manufacturing. The government has indicated that the legislation will be presented to the legislative assembly for formal passage within the next few weeks.
