The state government’s initiative to teach functional Marathi to non-native drivers has seen more than 100,000 participants complete the course, boosting road safety and administrative efficiency.

The Maharashtra government’s ‘Functional Marathi for Drivers’ campaign has successfully trained over 100,000 non-Marathi speaking drivers across the state. The program, launched earlier this year, aims to equip drivers with basic Marathi language skills needed for interacting with traffic police, filing reports and understanding road signage. According to the Ministry of Road Transport, the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve road safety and streamline administrative processes for drivers. Officials say the training has already helped reduce communication gaps during traffic violations and accident investigations. The state plans to extend the course to include advanced Marathi modules and to collaborate with local transport authorities for continuous learning.
