The Maharashtra government is set to introduce a pioneering land tokenisation framework, the first of its kind in India, according to former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Maharashtra has announced plans to roll out a land tokenisation framework that would digitise property records and enable secure, blockchain‑based transactions. The initiative, described by former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis as a first for the nation, aims to streamline land deals and curb fraud.

State officials are reportedly drafting the regulatory guidelines that will govern the creation, transfer and verification of digital land tokens. If approved, the system could serve as a model for other Indian states seeking to modernise their land‑registry processes.

The move aligns with broader government efforts to adopt emerging technologies in public services, and it reflects Maharashtra’s ambition to position itself as a leader in fintech and digital governance.

Stakeholders, including landowners, banks and real‑estate developers, are expected to be consulted during the finalisation of the framework. The timeline for implementation has not been disclosed.

Business Standard reported the development, noting that the framework could bring greater transparency and efficiency to the state’s property market.
