From October 16, Maharashtra’s municipal and panchayat bodies will reduce water supply by at least 10% as authorities aim to curb the growing shortage.
The state water department announced that, beginning on October 16, all urban municipal corporations and rural panchayat councils in Maharashtra will enforce a minimum 10% reduction in water distribution. The directive, reported by Business Standard, is a response to persistent shortfalls in reservoir levels and delayed monsoon rains.
Authorities said the cut will be applied uniformly across the state's 36 districts, affecting both household consumption and non‑domestic uses such as irrigation and industrial processes. Residents are advised to conserve water and limit non‑essential usage during the period.
The department will monitor supply levels daily and may adjust the reduction percentage if the situation improves or worsens. Water tankers are being positioned in vulnerable areas to mitigate the impact on critical services.
Local bodies have been instructed to communicate the schedule to consumers through public notices, SMS alerts and community meetings, ensuring that the public is aware of the expected constraints.
