The Maharashtra government announced a 10% reduction in water supply starting October 16, citing a deficient monsoon season.
Maharashtra's water department said a 10% cut in water supply will be implemented from October 16 as the state grapples with a deficient monsoon. The decision was taken after recent rainfall fell well below the seasonal average, leaving major reservoirs at critically low levels.
The monsoon shortfall has reduced inflow to key dams such as the Bhatsa, Mulshi and Khadakwasla, prompting officials to tighten distribution norms for both domestic and agricultural users. Earlier this year, the state had already imposed voluntary restrictions, but the current deficit forced a mandatory reduction.
Authorities have urged residents to conserve water and have warned that non‑compliance could attract penalties. The cut is expected to last until the monsoon improves, with periodic reviews scheduled by the state water board.
