The Maharashtra Port Authority announced it will scrap its proposal to lease Baina beach following strong local opposition.

The Maharashtra Port Authority (MPA) said it will no longer pursue its plan to lease Baina beach, a popular coastal stretch near Alibag in Maharashtra, after encountering organized opposition.

In a statement released by the authority, officials confirmed that the leasing proposal has been withdrawn and that the beach will remain under public control.

The opposition was led by local residents and environmental groups who expressed concerns over potential commercialisation and the impact on the coastal ecosystem. The MPA said it respects the community’s sentiment and will reassess its approach to coastal development.

With the lease plan shelved, any immediate tourism‑related construction on the beach is halted, and the area will continue to be managed as a public space.

Authorities indicated they will explore alternative, sustainable tourism initiatives that do not involve leasing the shoreline to private operators.
