The Maharashtra government has announced a plan to divert 70 thousand million cubic feet of water from the Ulhas River to the Godavari basin over a seven‑year period to mitigate the severe drought affecting the Marathwada region.
Maharashtra has unveiled a water‑diversion scheme aimed at easing the Marathwada drought. The plan will transfer 70 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the Ulhas River to the Godavari basin over a span of seven years.
The move is intended to supplement irrigation supplies in drought‑stricken districts such as Aurangabad, Beed and Latur. The state’s water resources department said the diversion will be executed through a series of inter‑basin pipelines and canals.
Officials highlighted that the project will involve coordination with the Central Water Commission and will be subject to environmental clearance. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve water security in Maharashtra’s interior regions.
