Starting August 18, Maharashtra will require all auto, taxi and cab drivers to speak Marathi, as part of a new state policy.
Maharashtra has announced that from 18 August, all drivers of auto rickshaws, taxis and private cabs must be able to communicate in Marathi. The decision, taken by the state transport department, aims to improve customer service and ensure better interaction with passengers.
Under the new rule, drivers will be required to demonstrate basic proficiency in Marathi during their licensing process. Those who fail to meet the language requirement may face suspension of their driving permits.
The policy is expected to be enforced through periodic checks by transport officials and will be monitored by the state’s motor vehicle department. The government has not yet released detailed guidelines on how language proficiency will be assessed.
The move comes amid growing calls for greater linguistic inclusivity in public services across Maharashtra. While the policy has been welcomed by some local communities, it has also sparked debate among transport unions about the feasibility of implementation.
