The Election Commission of India has commenced a special intensive revision of voter lists in Maharashtra, employing a door‑to‑door verification process to ensure accuracy before the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rolled out a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Maharashtra, with a focus on door‑to‑door verification of voters. The initiative, launched on Monday, aims to eliminate duplicate entries, update addresses and remove deceased names from the voter list. Teams of election officials and volunteers will visit households across the state, cross‑checking voter details against the latest census data and local records. The process is expected to cover all 36 districts and is scheduled to conclude by the end of September, ahead of the 2024 assembly elections.
The door‑to‑door approach is a first for Maharashtra, following similar trials in a few other states. According to the ECI, the revision will also involve the use of biometric verification at polling booths to further reduce fraud. The commission has urged voters to verify their details during the revision period and to report any discrepancies to the local election office.
Officials say the intensive revision will strengthen the credibility of the electoral process and ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot without technical glitches. The ECI has also announced that the updated rolls will be published online and on the state’s official election portal for public scrutiny.
