The state cabinet approved a Rs 4,000 crore package to write off agricultural loans, aiming to relieve indebted farmers across Maharashtra.
Mumbai, Oct 30 — The Maharashtra government announced a Rs 4,000 crore financial package to waive outstanding agricultural loans for eligible farmers. The scheme, unveiled during a cabinet meeting, is intended to reduce the debt burden that has plagued the state's agrarian community for years.
Under the waiver, farmers with loans up to Rs 5 lakh from banks and cooperative societies will be eligible for full relief, while those with higher dues may receive partial forgiveness based on income criteria. Officials said the move will be implemented through existing banking channels within the next two months.
State officials highlighted that the initiative aligns with the broader goal of revitalising rural economies and preventing farmer distress. While the announcement coincided with a public appearance of senior political leaders, the focus remained on the financial relief for the farming sector.
The finance ministry has directed district authorities to verify loan records and ensure that the waiver reaches genuine beneficiaries. Monitoring mechanisms, including third‑party audits, will be put in place to curb misuse of funds.
Analysts note that the Rs 4,000 crore allocation represents a significant fiscal commitment, reflecting the government's response to mounting agrarian challenges ahead of the upcoming state elections.
