The Maharashtra government has launched combined forest department and police squads to intensify investigations into wildlife crimes across the state.

Maharashtra has announced the creation of joint task forces comprising forest officials and police officers to strengthen the probe of wildlife offences. The combined teams will coordinate investigations, gather evidence and pursue legal action against poachers and illegal traders operating in the state. Authorities said the move aims to curb rising incidents of poaching and the illicit wildlife trade that threaten biodiversity. The initiative reflects a broader effort to enforce existing wildlife protection laws more effectively. Officials expect the collaborative approach to improve detection rates and deter future violations.

The new squads will operate across districts with known wildlife habitats, sharing resources and intelligence between the forest department and law‑enforcement agencies. Training sessions are planned to ensure personnel are equipped with the necessary investigative skills and knowledge of wildlife statutes. By pooling expertise, the state hopes to achieve faster case resolution and stronger deterrence.

Stakeholders, including conservation NGOs, have welcomed the step, noting that coordinated action is essential to protect endangered species and preserve ecological balance. The joint teams will also work with central agencies when required, reinforcing Maharashtra's commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage.
