The state food safety authority has issued a new order aimed at tightening controls on edible‑oil manufacturers across Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has rolled out a fresh directive targeting manufacturers of edible oil. The order, announced earlier this week, mandates stricter quality checks, mandatory labelling of oil purity and tighter compliance with the state's price‑cap regulations.
According to the FDA, the move seeks to curb adulteration and ensure that consumers receive oil that meets prescribed safety standards. Manufacturers are required to submit batch‑wise test reports to the authority within a stipulated timeframe, failing which penalties ranging from fines to suspension of licences may be imposed.
While the order primarily focuses on production units, officials acknowledged that its impact on downstream vendors, such as street‑side food stalls, remains to be monitored. The agency said it would assess whether the new compliance framework eventually filters down to retail outlets.
Industry bodies have welcomed the initiative but cautioned that implementation costs could affect small‑scale producers. The FDA has promised periodic reviews to address any operational challenges faced by the sector.
