Experts say Maharashtra’s drought cannot be officially declared until at least October, citing seasonal rainfall patterns and assessment protocols.
The state of Maharashtra continues to grapple with a severe water shortage as monsoon rains have fallen well below average, leaving large swathes of the region in drought conditions. Meteorological data released this week shows that the cumulative rainfall deficit has crossed the threshold that typically triggers a formal drought alert.
According to the state’s drought assessment guidelines, an official declaration can only be made after the monsoon season ends and comprehensive data on rainfall, groundwater levels, and crop performance are compiled. Since the monsoon period in Maharashtra runs until the end of September, authorities cannot meet the procedural requirements before October.
The delay in formal declaration does not mean relief measures are on hold. The government has already activated contingency plans, including water tankering, crop‑insurance schemes, and advisory notices for farmers. Officials emphasized that the October timeline is a procedural necessity, not a reflection of the urgency of the situation on the ground.
