The Maharashtra government has officially designated August 17 as ‘Shivchaturya Din’ to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s daring escape from Agra in 1666.

The Maharashtra state government has announced that 17 August will be observed as ‘Shivchaturya Din’ across the state. The day marks the anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s escape from the Mughal camp in Agra in 1666. The decision was taken by the state’s cabinet and will be celebrated with cultural programmes and speeches by political leaders.

The declaration aims to revive the spirit of courage and strategic brilliance associated with Shivaji Maharaj. Officials said the day will be used to promote historical awareness among citizens and to inspire youth with stories of resilience.

The state’s tourism department has also announced special exhibitions in museums and heritage sites to showcase artifacts related to Shivaji’s reign and his escape from Agra. The event is expected to attract historians, students and tourists alike.
