The Madras High Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate steps for constructing a new government hospital in the town of Ilayangudi, Sivaganga district.

The Madras High Court issued a directive on Tuesday ordering the Tamil Nadu state government to initiate the construction of a new government hospital in Ilayangudi, a town in the Sivaganga district. The court observed that the existing medical facilities in the area are inadequate to meet the health needs of the local population.

In its order, the bench instructed the state health department to submit a detailed implementation plan within a stipulated period, covering land acquisition, funding allocation, and timelines for completion. The court also mandated regular monitoring to ensure that the project proceeds without undue delay.

The decision comes amid growing concerns over healthcare accessibility in rural Tamil Nadu, where many residents travel long distances for basic medical services. State officials have pledged to comply with the court's order and expedite the hospital project to improve health outcomes for the community.

Local representatives welcomed the ruling, stating that a new government hospital will reduce the burden on nearby tertiary centres and provide essential services such as emergency care, maternity wards, and outpatient clinics within Ilayangudi itself.
