The Madhya Pradesh government has begun releasing wild buffaloes into the state’s forests, marking the first such effort in a century.

The wildlife department of Madhya Pradesh announced the commencement of a wild buffalo reintroduction programme, the first of its kind in the state for a hundred years. The initiative involves transporting healthy individuals from captive breeding centres to designated forest areas where the species once roamed freely. Officials said the move aims to restore ecological balance and enhance biodiversity in the region.

Conservation experts are monitoring the released animals closely to assess their adaptation to the wild and to mitigate potential human‑wildlife conflicts. The programme is part of a broader state strategy to revive native fauna that declined due to habitat loss and hunting in the past.

The first batch of buffaloes was released under strict supervision, with tracking devices attached to gather data on movement patterns. Authorities plan to evaluate the outcomes before scaling up the effort to other suitable habitats across Madhya Pradesh.
