An Islamic council in Madhya Pradesh has warned Muslim youngsters against attending Garba events merely to create reels and gain online views, urging respect for the festival’s true spirit.
The Madhya Pradesh Islamic Council released a public advisory aimed at Muslim youth ahead of the upcoming Navratri celebrations. The statement cautions against participating in Garba gatherings solely for the purpose of filming short videos and chasing social media views.
Council members argued that such behaviour undermines the cultural and communal essence of the dance, turning a traditional festivity into a platform for personal publicity. They emphasized that while participation is permissible, it should be guided by respect for the event’s religious and social significance.
The advisory also called on families and community leaders to guide young people towards more meaningful engagement, focusing on unity and the spirit of Navratri rather than digital applause.
As Garba events are set to take place across major cities in the state, the council hopes its message will encourage a balanced approach that honors both tradition and contemporary sensibilities.
No official response from other religious or cultural groups has been reported yet.
