Madhya Pradesh High Court strikes down 27% OBC quota law, Patel slams Congress

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has declared unconstitutional the state law that set a 27% reservation for OBCs, prompting senior BJP leader Prahlad Patel to accuse the Congress of engineering the setback.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday nullified the state legislation that sought to increase the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) to 27% in government jobs and educational institutions. The bench held that the amendment violated constitutional limits on reservation percentages and therefore could not be enforced.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Prahlad Patel, who heads the party's OBC cell in the state, immediately blamed the opposition Congress for the court's decision. Patel said the legal challenge was part of a coordinated effort by the Congress to undermine the BJP's social justice agenda in Madhya Pradesh.

The verdict adds to a series of judicial interventions on reservation policies across India, where courts have repeatedly examined the balance between affirmative action and the constitutional ceiling of 50% total reservations. The state government has not yet indicated whether it will appeal the ruling or seek a legislative amendment to address the court's concerns.
