A man in Ludhiana pretended to be a customer‑care executive, convinced a victim to install a malicious APK and siphoned off Rs 1.80 lakh, police said.

Ludhiana police have reported a fraud case in which an individual masqueraded as a customer‑care executive and persuaded a victim to install a suspicious application on his phone. The victim, believing the call to be legitimate, complied with the request, after which the perpetrator accessed the device and transferred Rs 1.80 lakh to his own accounts.

Investigators say the fraudster used social‑engineering tactics, claiming the APK was required for a service verification. Once installed, the malicious software allowed remote control of the phone, enabling the theft of funds without the victim’s knowledge.

The police have launched an inquiry, collecting call records and device logs to trace the suspect. They have urged the public to verify the identity of any caller claiming to be from a service provider and to avoid installing unsolicited applications. Anyone with information about the case is requested to contact the Ludhiana cybercrime cell.
