The Lok Sabha Secretariat has formally notified 20 rebel members of the Trinamool Congress about pending disqualification petitions, following a Supreme Court directive to speed up the process amid allegations of Tenth Schedule violations linked to their merger with the Nationalist Congress Party.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat has sent a formal notice to 20 members of the Trinamool Congress who have defected to the Nationalist Congress Party, informing them that their disqualification petitions are under review. The notice is part of the procedural steps required before the Speaker can decide on the removal of these MPs.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court directed the Lok Sabha to expedite the disqualification process, citing concerns that the MPs’ switch to the NCPI may constitute a breach of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which governs anti‑defection laws. The Court’s order aims to ensure that the matter is resolved swiftly and transparently.

The 20 MPs joined the NCPI after breaking away from the TMC, prompting the party to file disqualification petitions. The Secretariat’s notice confirms that the petitions have been received and are being processed in accordance with parliamentary rules.

Once the Secretariat completes its review, the case will be forwarded to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a final decision. Until then, the MPs remain in their seats, but their status is under scrutiny as the disqualification process moves forward.
