A brief spell of light rain accompanied by strong breezes eased the scorching heat in Jalandhar, Punjab today.
Jalandhar in Punjab experienced a sudden change in weather as light rain showers combined with gusty winds swept across the city this afternoon. Meteorological stations recorded wind speeds reaching 30-35 km/h and a brief drizzle that lasted for about an hour, breaking the prolonged heatwave that had persisted for several days.
The unexpected downpour lowered ambient temperatures by roughly 4-5 degrees Celsius, providing immediate comfort to residents who had been coping with daytime highs above 40°C. Street vendors, commuters and pedestrians were seen seeking shelter under awnings and trees, while many welcomed the cooling effect with relief.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the weather shift to a weak low-pressure system moving eastward over northern India, bringing moisture-laden air into the region. Officials noted that similar breezy conditions are expected to continue into the evening, though further rainfall is unlikely.
Local authorities reminded the public to stay cautious on wet roads and to avoid standing water, while also highlighting that the temporary respite does not signal the end of the summer heat season.
