Heavy rain triggered landslides in Gangtok, Sikkim, halting road traffic and damaging residential structures, prompting the Disaster Management Authority to launch emergency measures.

Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has caused multiple landslides across the hills surrounding Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. The sudden movement of earth blocked several key arterial roads, leaving commuters stranded and forcing authorities to suspend public transport services on affected routes.

The landslides also damaged a number of residential buildings, with reports of cracked walls and roof collapses in low‑lying neighbourhoods. Local residents were evacuated from the most vulnerable zones, and emergency shelters have been set up by the state Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to provide temporary accommodation.

DDMA officials have deployed rescue teams and heavy‑machinery to clear debris and restore connectivity. They have also issued advisories urging people to avoid non‑essential travel, stay away from hill slopes, and follow updates from the district administration as the situation evolves.
