The Ladakh administration has officially notified Sankoo as a new district, expanding the region's administrative map.
The Ladakh administration announced today that Sankoo, a sub‑division in Kargil district, will be upgraded to district status, marking the first such change since the union territory was formed in 2019.
The notification, issued by the Lieutenant Governor’s office, outlines the administrative boundaries and will see the establishment of a district headquarters in Sankoo, with plans for new government offices and infrastructure to support local governance.
Officials said the move aims to improve service delivery, bring development projects closer to residents, and address long‑standing demands from the local population for greater administrative autonomy.
The reorganisation will also require adjustments in resource allocation, including staffing, budgeting and coordination with the existing Kargil district administration, which will continue to function alongside the new district.
The decision is expected to be implemented over the coming months, with the government inviting public feedback on the transition process.
