Following a recent hotel fire, Kolkata authorities have ordered the closure of 13 hotels and issued fire‑safety notices to more than 50 establishments.

The West Bengal Fire Service launched a surprise inspection across Kolkata after a blaze broke out in a city hotel earlier this month. Inspectors found widespread lapses in fire‑prevention measures, prompting immediate action.
As a result, 13 hotels were ordered to shut down until they could meet the mandatory safety standards. In addition, fire officials served formal notices to over 50 other hotels, directing them to rectify deficiencies such as missing extinguishers, blocked exits, and inadequate alarm systems.
Hotel owners have been given a stipulated period to comply, after which further penalties or closures may be imposed. The crackdown underscores the authorities' intent to prevent another tragedy and enforce stricter compliance with the National Building Code and state fire‑safety regulations.
The fire department has urged the hospitality sector to conduct regular drills and upgrade equipment, emphasizing that public safety cannot be compromised for commercial convenience.
