The Jammu & Kashmir government has officially adopted the Khalij Pheasant as the state's avian emblem.
The government of Jammu and Kashmir announced today that the Khalij Pheasant will serve as the union territory's official avian emblem. The decision was communicated through a press release issued by the state administration.
The Khalij Pheasant, a bird native to the highland forests of the region, is renowned for its striking iridescent plumage and distinctive call. Conservationists have highlighted the species as an indicator of the health of the sub‑alpine ecosystem.
By selecting the Khalij Pheasant, officials aim to promote awareness of the area's biodiversity and reinforce regional identity. The emblem is expected to appear on official documents, tourism material and educational resources.
The move follows a broader effort to showcase indigenous flora and fauna as symbols of cultural heritage across Indian states.
