The village of Khaira in Chhattisgarh has achieved 100% solar electrification, marking the first time a community in India has been powered entirely by solar energy under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

Khaira, a small village in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district, has been declared the first 100 per cent solar village in India under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Yojana. The government’s solar electrification scheme, launched in 2021, aims to provide clean, reliable power to rural households.

The village’s 150 households now receive electricity from rooftop solar panels installed across homes and community buildings. The project was completed in early March after a coordinated effort by the state electricity board, local Panchayat and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Officials said the initiative will reduce dependence on diesel generators and improve the quality of life for residents. The Surya Ghar scheme also includes training for local technicians to maintain the panels, ensuring long‑term sustainability.

Khaira’s achievement is expected to serve as a model for other rural areas across the country, demonstrating the feasibility of large‑scale solar adoption in villages with limited grid connectivity.
