The Kerala government has approved a ₹1,105 crore allocation to begin welfare pension payments today, covering around 6.5 million beneficiaries.

Kerala’s Finance Ministry announced the sanction of a ₹1,105 crore fund to fund the state’s welfare pension scheme, with disbursements slated to begin on the festive day of Onam. The allocation is expected to reach approximately 6.5 million pensioners across the state, providing regular financial support to senior citizens and other eligible groups.

The move comes as part of the state’s broader social security agenda, aiming to strengthen the safety net for vulnerable sections of society. Officials said the payments will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, reducing delays and ensuring transparency.

The scheme, which has been in planning for several months, aligns with Kerala’s tradition of celebrating Onam with inclusive welfare measures. Authorities have urged eligible citizens to verify their details with local panchayats to avoid any disruption in the first round of payouts.

Stakeholders, including senior citizen associations, welcomed the announcement, describing it as timely relief during the festive season. The government has indicated that subsequent phases of the pension program will be monitored closely to address any operational challenges.

The first batch of payments is scheduled for release later today, marking a significant step in the state’s effort to deliver on its commitment to social welfare.
