Kedarnath Generates 50.3 Tonnes of Waste in Five Months, 2.5 Times More Than Last Year

Kedarnath, the famed Hindu pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand, has seen a dramatic rise in waste generation, accumulating 50.3 tonnes in the first five months of 2024. This amount is 2.5 times higher than the waste collected during the same period last year. The surge is attributed to increased tourist footfall and the lack of adequate waste management infrastructure. Local authorities have announced plans to strengthen waste segregation and disposal mechanisms, including the deployment of additional bins and the introduction of a temporary waste collection schedule. The government is also exploring partnerships with environmental NGOs to ensure proper disposal and recycling of the accumulated waste.
