Rani Chennamma of Kittur in Karnataka led a successful armed resistance against the British about thirty years before the 1857 uprising, but was later forced to surrender and lost her kingdom.

Karnataka’s 19th‑century queen, Rani Chennamma of the princely state of Kittur, mounted a determined armed challenge to the British East India Company around 1820, roughly three decades before the famed 1857 rebellion led by Rani Lakshmibai.

Her forces managed to repel an early British expedition, compelling the colonial troops to retreat and marking a rare instance of a native ruler inflicting a tactical defeat on the empire in the Deccan region.

Despite the initial success, the British returned with larger contingents, eventually capturing Kittur and imprisoning the queen. The loss of her fort and the annexation of her territory ended her brief period of autonomy.

Rani Chennamma’s resistance is now remembered as an early episode of Indian defiance against colonial rule, highlighting the broader pattern of regional uprisings that preceded the larger 1857 revolt.
