The Karnataka government will roll out a geofencing application on November 1 to monitor doctors’ attendance during night shifts. The app will record location data to ensure compliance with duty schedules.
The Karnataka government announced that, starting November 1, a geofencing application will be deployed to track the night‑time attendance of doctors across the state. The app will use GPS data to confirm that physicians are present at their assigned hospitals during overnight duty hours.
Under the new system, a virtual boundary will be set around each hospital. When a doctor’s mobile device enters or exits this zone, the app logs the time and location, providing a digital record of shift compliance. Hospital administrators will be able to review these logs to verify that staff are meeting their contractual obligations.
Health officials say the move aims to reduce absenteeism, improve patient care and ensure that emergency services are adequately staffed. The government has also indicated that the data will be used for performance reviews and to identify patterns of irregular attendance.
Some privacy concerns have been raised, but the department has assured that the app will only collect location data during scheduled shifts and that personal information will remain confidential. The rollout will begin with a pilot phase in major district hospitals before expanding statewide.
