Karnataka to Rename Karwar Medical College After Former Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde

The Karnataka government announced that the medical college in Karwar will be renamed to honor former chief minister Ramakrishna Hegde, as stated by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told reporters that the state will rename the government medical college in Karwar after the late Ramakrishna Hegde, a former chief minister of Karnataka. The decision was conveyed during a press briefing in Bengaluru and is expected to be formalised through a government order later this month.
The Karwar Medical College, established in 2019, serves the coastal districts of Uttara Kannada and surrounding regions, providing undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The institution has been instrumental in expanding healthcare access in the remote Konkan belt.
Ramakrishna Hegde, who led Karnataka for three terms between 1983 and 1990, is remembered for his reforms in decentralisation, rural development and public health. Naming the college after him is intended to honour his legacy and inspire future medical professionals.
State officials said the renaming will involve updating signage, official documents and the college’s digital presence. No opposition or controversy has been reported so far, and the move has been welcomed by local leaders and alumni.
