The Karnataka government will roll out a points‑based system for driving licences, aiming to curb repeat traffic violations. Offenders who accumulate points will face licence suspension.
The Karnataka government announced that it will introduce a points‑based system for issuing and renewing driving licences as part of a broader effort to reduce traffic accidents and enforce road safety.
Under the new scheme, each traffic offence will carry a certain number of points. Accumulating a predefined number of points within a set period will trigger automatic suspension of the licence.
Transport officials said the system will be rolled out in phases and will be integrated with the existing electronic licence database.
The change is expected to deter repeat offenders and streamline the process of monitoring driver behaviour. Guidelines will be issued to police stations and licensing authorities.
While a specific launch date has not yet been announced, officials say the scheme will be operational by the end of the fiscal year.
