From September 30, Karnataka will levy a 2% cess on movie tickets, increasing the cost for cinema‑goers across the state.
The Karnataka government announced that a new 2% cess will be imposed on cinema tickets starting September 30. The levy is added to the existing Goods and Services Tax (GST) and is expected to raise the price of a standard ticket by a few rupees, depending on the theatre and seat class.
State officials said the additional revenue will be directed to welfare schemes, though the exact allocation has not been detailed. The move aligns with recent fiscal measures in several Indian states aimed at boosting non‑tax revenues.
