Facing criticism over the absence of women in the state cabinet, Karnataka minister DK Shivakumar assured that a female minister will be appointed soon.

Karnataka’s ruling party has come under pressure after civil society groups and opposition leaders highlighted the complete lack of female representation in the state’s cabinet. The criticism intensified ahead of recent discussions on a possible reshuffle of ministerial portfolios.

In response, senior minister DK Shivakumar told reporters that the government is committed to correcting the gender imbalance, stating, “We will definitely have a woman minister.” He said the decision would be taken after consultations within the party and with senior officials.

Shivakumar’s remarks signal an acknowledgement of the growing demand for greater gender diversity in Karnataka’s governance. While no timeline was provided, the promise suggests that a female minister could be named in the next cabinet re‑organisation, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Political analysts note that the inclusion of a woman minister could help the ruling party address voter concerns ahead of upcoming local elections, and may also improve its standing on gender‑equality metrics nationally.
