Minister DK Shivakumar has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that the centre bear half the cost of drought relief measures in Karnataka.
Karnataka's senior minister DK Shivakumar sent a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Union government to share 50 percent of the financial burden for drought mitigation in the state. The appeal comes as the region grapples with prolonged water scarcity, affecting agriculture, drinking water supplies and livestock.
Shivakumar highlighted that the current drought has pushed many farmers into distress, with crop losses reported across several districts. He argued that a joint funding model would enable quicker implementation of measures such as borewell drilling, water tank construction and crop insurance schemes.
The minister also referenced earlier central assistance provided during past droughts, suggesting that a similar partnership this time could accelerate relief efforts and prevent a deeper agrarian crisis in Karnataka.
