The Karnataka High Court warned the Enforcement Directorate that it cannot act as an all‑powerful investigative body, emphasizing legal limits on its powers.

Bengaluru, Nov 7 2026 – In a decisive pronouncement, the Karnataka High Court cautioned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that it is not a “super cop” with unrestricted investigative authority. The bench, while hearing a petition related to a recent money‑laundering probe, underscored that the ED must operate within the framework of existing statutes and respect procedural safeguards.

The court observed that the agency’s powers, though robust, are subject to judicial oversight and cannot be exercised arbitrarily. It directed the ED to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Prevention of Money‑Laundering Act and other relevant laws, reminding officials that any overreach could be challenged in court.

Legal experts say the ruling reinforces the balance between aggressive anti‑corruption efforts and the rule of law. The decision is expected to shape how the ED conducts future investigations across the state, ensuring that its actions remain transparent and accountable.

The High Court also instructed the petitioners to file any further grievances within a stipulated timeframe, signaling that the matter will continue to be monitored closely.
